Contemporary Scottish Artist Stuart Buchanan returns to Modern Artists Gallery.
Following the success of previous shows at the gallery, Stuart Buchanan has firmly established himself as a major force within the contemporary art world.
Buchanan’s work is immediately identifiable and many of his popular themes are re-visited. A selection of the artist’s characters mesmerised by their watery surroundings. The paintings resonate quietude yet are subtly amusing. Stuart Buchanan has found a very comfortable refuge where the viewer can ignore the havoc of the outside world.
The importance placed on water is undoubtedly inspired by the coastal location of the artist’s home and studio in the remote fishing village of Catterline on Scotland’s East Coast. It is no surprise to hear that Buchanan is not the only artist to be inspired by the views from his studio The Watchie. This small fisherman’s cottage was previously home to two of Scotland’s most important artists of the twentieth century, Scottish Colourist JD Fergusson (1874-1961), and Joan Eardley (1921-1963). The two artists are integral in Scotland’s artistic heritage and Stuart Buchanan is following their footsteps.
