Storytelling Revisited is a series of new paintings which explore the interplay between storytelling and image. The complex accumulation of motifs in the artist’s work requires careful unpicking by the viewer and personal interpretation. Unlike a children’s picture book, which illustrates a precise story, the meaning here is more complex and different for every viewer. This ambiguity allows the artist to pursue more complex themes such as his father’s escape from Germany before World War II, and the idea that human society represents a complete ecosystem within one species.

Since his student days the artist has been influenced by painters such as Douanier Rousseau, René Rimbert and Fernando Botero and like them uses naïf and expressive figures against brightly coloured backgrounds. However, the similarity stops there as the underlying themes can sometimes be playful but also subversive and disturbing.
