Eve Fairfax aged 101, by Toddy Hoare

Rev. Toddy Hoare is an Oxford-based sculptor and letter-cutter. He was educated at the London School of Art and (in Theology) at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. He has now taken early retirement after several decades of active ministry.

His work has been inspired by theological and literary themes, and the latest project included in the exhibition is the Station of the Odyssey, a series of letter-cuts inspired by Homer.

His two major projects with Arts Council grants can be viewed at Burton Agnes Hall, East Riding of Yorkshire, consisting of two sets of 8 door-sized panels of the Call of the Disciples and The Stations of the Cross.

His one claim to fame is sharing a model with Rodin: Eve Fairfax was 30 years old in 1903 when Rodin made the first of a series of heads of her (one of these bronzes is in the V&A ), and 101 when she sat for Toddy 70 years later. She died age 107. Her portrait head is among the pieces included in the St John’s exhibition.
