Celia Johnson is middle-class suburban housewife Laura Jesson. Returning from her weekly shopping trip one afternoon, a chance meeting in a railway station buffet with Dr Alec Harvey (Trevor Howard) is the spark for a casual friendship that soon combusts into something more passionate. But as Laura and Alec are both happily married with children, and this is pre-war England, how can their relationship develop without ending in disaster?

Featuring an Oscar-nominated performance from Celia Johnson, the film is also notable for the comic relief provided by Stanley Holloway, Joyce Carey and Irene Handl, among others. With its superlative photography, atmospheric location sequences filmed at Carnforth railway station, assured direction from David Lean and the haunting music of Rachmaninov, Brief Encounter is a nostalgic and poignant treat for the senses.
Voted the second greatest British movie of all time by the British Film Institute, Brief Encounter has long been enshrined in cinema history as one of the finest 'weepies' ever made.
