Pablo Picasso by Peter Ross

Peter trained at Newport Art College, South Wales and also in Bristol. He has exhibited in solo and joint shows in the UK for most of his career, including exhibitions for The Welsh Arts Council, South Wales Group and Welsh Artist of the Year Show 2008. Recently his paintings have been used to advertise and promote conferences and events in the UK, Europe and the USA. In 2014 his work was also selected to feature in 'Dylan Thomas: A Centenary Celebration'. A book about Dylan Thomas written by his grand daughter, Hannah Ellis.
The Exhibition
Like most representational art, the work in this exhibition is mostly self-explanatory but here is a simple rundown of why and how it developed.
I have always been a theme based painter. My interest in a theme can last from one year to five years and will generate many paintings before the idea plays itself out. I don't really know how themes start and in some ways the subject matter is irrelevant and will always change to re-energise the urge to paint.
This exhibition contains some work from three recent themes:
Artists and Their Work
As an artist I am interested in other artists and what they produce. My paintings are a personal reminder of some of those familiar and well-known art works that have given me great pleasure and also act as a constant inspiration.
Churches
The churches in my paintings are all in West Oxfordshire and represent to me a surprising choice for a painting theme. I cannot remember the starting point although I have always liked the imposing quality of country churches with their often beautiful settings and calm interiors.
Landscapes
Occasionally I return to a subject, as with the landscapes which interpret the surroundings near my home in East End, North Leigh. These are more intimate. I am not so drawn to traditional or recognised landscapes. What I am depicting here are the sparks of recognition seen on country walks; a glimpse of sunlight or a dark shadow of roots. Something which could be anywhere but is personal to me and very familiar.
In the recent past, figures have played a major role in my work. My most recent exhibited work has been my series of Bob Dylan and Dylan Thomas paintings, so it is relatively unusual to have so many paintings on show without figures in them.
