Trio sonatas by Buxtehude and Schmelzer are punctuated by works for solo countertenor. The sparse pairing of continuo and voice in Schütz’s Ich danke den Herrn contrasts with the rich textures of Tunder’s Salve mi Jesu and the exuberant virtuosity demanded of both voice and gamba in Buxtehude’s Jubilate Domino.
