The Secret Staircase is an exhibition/installation by artist Caroline Isgar and writer Michèle Roberts. Inspired by the eighteenth-century tokens left by mothers with their babies at the Foundling Hospital in London (and previously shown there) it comprises artefacts, an incised table-top which also serves as a woodblock, a woodcut, a text, and an artist’s book, and explores mother-child separation in our own day.
