Creative Engagement and Learning Co-ordinator

Over the past few years, the Old Fire Station’s work with communities has developed in a number of ways.

Since 2017 we have been using storytelling to evaluate the impact of our work. This involves collecting stories from people about their experience of a project, and then analysing these stories in a participatory way to help us evaluate and learn about impact.

Recently we have adapted the approach to work with partners to learn from and amplify stories, and since 2019 we have supported and trained over 25 organisations in using this approach. This has led us to work with new partners, embark on exciting creative projects, and develop our work with communities across Oxford. We’ve also been involved in conversations about ‘meaningful measurement’ - how to shift evaluation from being an ‘add-on’ at the end of a project driven by Key Performance Indicators (which were decided before the work even began), towards a meaningful learning process which enables the people involved to determine what impact looks like for them. In 2022, we will work closely with local partners to learn about more meaningful evaluation tools, test approaches in specific areas of the city, and use our findings to influence the system locally.

We have also been exploring new ways to work creatively with individuals and groups across Oxford. We’ve opened a new project space in the building on Gloucester Green, worked in partnership with local artists to provide creative workshops, and have brought together artists, Crisis clients and other members of the community to work collaboratively on high quality creative projects, including an ambitious promenade theatre production called Atlantis. Through this work we’ve developed our relationships with individuals and groups across the city, and have begun to work with people in new and creative ways.

Moving forward, we want to continue to develop and deepen our work with partners and communities through storytelling and wider creative opportunities. The Creative Engagement and Learning Coordinator will play an important role in helping us to deliver these exciting areas of work and will help to explore and develop the ways in which they interlink. Working closely with the Head of Inclusion and Learning and Exhibitions and Workshops Manager, the role will focus on training and facilitation, working with community groups, and supporting the engagement of Crisis clients, artists and the wider community in our creative work.
