Bellway plc are looking to commission an artist to design and make unique and distinctive artwork for our new housing development on Wallingford Road in Cholsey.
A key feature of the development is the extensive area of public open space and the community woodland with play facilities and bridleways located within it. Given the intention for the area of public open space around the edge of the site to be enjoyed by the wider community of Cholsey, it is proposed that the public art installation also be located in this area, in order to provide further enhancement and interest to this area of the site, where it can be enjoyed by all.

The location, design and function of the artwork should not impact on the amenities of the site for future residents, but enhance and beautify the location, working with the theme of local natural history and the flora and fauna of the area (or even poppies).

We would ideally like the artwork to be a stand-alone focal feature, however artists should not feel limited to this criteria as all ideas (such as seating or paving) will be welcomed.

The piece of artwork in both areas located on the landscape plan would be positively considered. We are flexible with the choice of materials proposed, providing the cost of the artwork falls within the set budget, materials are durable, and maintenance requirements are minimal.

Bellway Homes, is working closely with South Oxfordshire District Council’s Arts Officer, Cholsey Parish Council or other suitable persons or organisation. The future management and maintenance of the installation will be transferred to the appointed Estates Management Company for the site.

Budget
Proposed budget £32,000, to include:
£2000 for a Design & Research phase (with community inclusion etc), after which designs (and/or models) will be presented to the steering group for approval and risk assessment (with adequate insurances, construction certificates, installation plan and full budget).
