Cowley Road Works is the small, independent charity that has produced this most memorable of Oxford events for over 10 years and its mission is simple, to engage and celebrate Oxford’s diverse communities and heritage through an annual Carnival, the charity’s flagship community event. At its heart the Carnival is an open, community-based event for the whole of Oxford, inspired by the rich diversity of the Cowley Road area and is supported by work throughout the year - exhibitions, events, outreach projects - carefully designed to engage different groups in different ways and to raise funds. A summary business plan is available.

The Trustees wish to appoint a Carnival Director to manage the delivery of Carnival 2020 and its associated projects. This includes working with a wide variety of stakeholders - arts and cultural partners, traders, grassroots community and cultural groups, as well as building relationships with businesses of all sizes for vital sponsorship of Carnival. The Carnival Director will work closely with the Creative Producer on encouraging Oxford’s arts and cultural organisations to share work at Carnival, developing a series of schools workshops, and (funding dependent) a youth street theatre academy, a large-scale community music and dance project and more.

The role will work alongside a two day a week Director who oversees the charity, governance, core staff and statutory and grant fundraising.

The Carnival Director will oversee the management of community, traders, companies and audiences engagement with Carnival and its associated projects, and to lead on all aspects of the Carnival management, including:

• Ambassadorship: initiate, develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders and partners, particularly city cultural partners, community groups and local shops and traders.
• Develop new corporate sponsorship relationships and strategy to deliver against sponsorship target.
• Manage the Carnival team to ensure effective delivery of Carnival and related projects. This includes the Carnival Producer, and Stalls Coordinator.
• Support the Carnival Producer in managing the Volunteer Coordinator, Technical Coordinator and other freelance Carnival staff roles and trainees.
• Manage the relationship with Carnival’s Event Management Company. Oversee any changes to Carnival, particularly in introducing sustainable practices.
